Paris Metro: However, despite not arriving until 1900, it's Paris' mass transit system that's given us the word 'metro'. 16 lines carry 4.5 million people over 300 stations and 214km of track. The Paris Metro is particularly noted for its art nouveau architecture and design. The Metro handles city centre transport, while the attached RER provides access to Paris' many banlieues.
