Oman awards $1m contract for power supply near Duqm fish centre
Oneic will establish power lines for the upcoming food hub within Duqm's special economic zone
Oman National Engineering & Investment Company (Oneic) has been awarded a power supply contract worth almost $1m by Rural Areas Electricity Company (Tanweer).
Oneic’s contract for Tanweer’s project is worth $984,600 (OMR378,587), and includes the establishment of power supply for a yet-to-be-built fish centre in Special Economic Zone in Duqm (SEZD).
Work will last approximately 150 days and will commence when Oneic has received a directive from the project management office to begin construction.
The contract comes after Oman Food Investment Holding Company signed a deal with Special Economic Zone Authority in Duqm to create a fishing hub in the area last year.
Plans for the complex include building a fishery harbour, landing areas for fish, support services, and processing facilities.
The move can be seen against a wider effort to improve food security in Oman, which is heavily dependent on imported produce.
