Design International has won a contract to install up to 500 waterless urinals across 50 Dubai Municipality parks, shopping centres, government buildings and public toilets.

The technology does not need water to flush waste away and uses a replaceable cartridge, supplied by US based Falcon Waterfree Technologies to seal urine and odours, sending any overflow down the drain.

It will be installed across parks including Jumeriah Beach Park, Creek Park, Safa Park and Zabeel Park as well as Dubai Cinema, the Gold Souk, Ravi Restaurant, Satwa Post Office and Government buildings.

Leandro Bantug is the managing director of Falcon’s Middle East distributor, Design International, based in Dubai.

He said, in terms of FM, the waterfree urinals offer a new technology, which can save costs on water consumption, especially in light of the recent DEWA price increase.

“We do the installations and provide a service to the facility where for each of our clients we train their staff on how to clean the toilets. The maintenance is simple and we come back every month to check on it free of charge,” he said.

“The product is a hit with contractors because they can be used on labour camps or in mobile cabins on construction sites. The product has been on the market for a while but it is only now taking off in the Middle East, with demand for sustainable green initiatives.”

DEWA announced in January residential water charges will increase from 3 to 3.5 fils per gallon for the first 6,000 gallons, from 3.5 to 4 fils per gallon for monthly consumption of 6,001 to 12,000 gallons and from 4 to 4.6 fils per gallon for usage over 12,000 gallons.

For commercial and industrial customers, water charges will increase from 3 to 3.5 fils per gallon for the first 10,000 gallons, from 3.5 to 4 fils per gallon for monthly consumption of 10,001 to 20,000 gallons and from 4 to 4.6 fils per gallon for usage over 20,000 gallons.

“The approach to this technology is education. That’s why we return to the client every month. We advise the FM on its benefits and provide any maintenance and replacement. The cartridge can be changed twice a year depending on usage,” added Bantug.

“The cartridge lies at the base of the urinal, there is no smell and it has a floating liquid oil based seal. The plastic is recyclable and we met with the MD of a firm in Sharjah who can recycle it but what they need is volume in its thousands.”

Customers include Dubai Airport departure lounge, Global Village annual Winter Festival, Al Futtaim Carillion site offices, Al Ain Al Futtaim Carillion, Black & Decker, Jebel Ali, and the Intercontinental and Dubai Crown hotels in Festival City.
