J Ray McDermott has won a contract for the construction, engineering, transportation and installation of two 38-inch (95cm) diameter pipelines, totalling 130km in length, and two 22-inch diameter interconnecting pipelines in Qatar's North Field.

The client is Qatargas 3 and Qatargas 4.

The pipelines will connect three wellhead platforms (WHP7, WHP8 and WHP9) with the onshore facilities at Ras Laffan Industrial City.

"Winning this project signifies our customer's confidence in our capabilities to handle major projects with successful results," said Bob Deason, chief executive officer, J Ray McDermott.

"Construction is already underway on the three associated wellhead topsides that were awarded to us in 2006. As such, J Ray McDermott will offer the customer greater synergies for the pipeline project, based on our project team's experience with the topsides contract."

The project will be executed by the company's Jebel Ali team.

The scope of work also involves laying 138km of 38-inch diameter combined power and fibre-optic cables interconnecting the wellhead platforms with onshore facilities, as well as two 0.5km 22-inch diameter intra-field pipelines.

The pipelines are made with corrosion-resistant alloy material.

Qatargas was established in 1984 to develop and pioneer the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market in Qatar. The current period of expansion will result in Qatar exporting 42 million tonnes per year of LNG by the end of 2010.
