Bhatia General Contracting has picked up a US $21 million (AED76 million) contract from Dubai Municipality for the construction of its new Dubai Central Laboratory and IT Network Operations Centre at the existing compound in Al Karama. Construction will begin later this week.

According to Hussain Nasser Lootah, acting director general, Dubai Municipality, work on the project is expected to be completed by the end of September 2008.

"The new premises will help Dubai Central Laboratory and the Network Operations Centre to have more and larger facilities and, subsequently, serve their customers better," he said.

The project will consist of two buildings. The first will include three laboratories: one for testing electric appliances, toys and cosmetics; one for checking weights, lengths and sizes of materials, and another for food and environment. The building will also include administrative offices.

The second building will house the Network Operations Centre.
