Al Khobar project 'needs international contractor'
Tender to go out for Saudi Jenan City project at end of 2011
An international contractor will be sought for a major project in Al Khobar later this year.
The developer behind the Jenan City development, a 290,000m2 mixed-use project in Saudi Arabia's east coast hub, is looking at major UAE contractors who may be looking to break into the Saudi market.
Yahya Jan, design director at architects NORR Consultants, told Construction Week: “The client’s thinking is that we are going to bring in an international contractor.
"Saudi Arabia has a couple of very big contractors so of course they will be invited, and beyond on that we see the the lead contractor coming from the UAE."
The project will be one of the biggest in recent years in Al Khobar, and is one of three projects that NORR has in the kingdom. Jan said that he would expect major UAE players to be interested in the project.
"We expect to see a lot of interest. It’s a big project so for the contractor that wins it is a good way to enter a new market.
I don't see a grade B contrctor winning this job, it has to be a grade A contractor."
The tender for the Al Khobar project, which is awaiting approval by Al Khobar municipality, will go out in Q4 2011.
