Qatar issues safety guide for construction workers

National Provisional Safety Committee to issue best practice guide

Qatar to issue best-practice safety standard guide.
Qatar to issue best-practice safety standard guide.

Extensive guidelines to ensure the safety and security of workers at construction sites are being prepared by the Qatari authorities, reports The Peninsula.

The guidelines, to be compiled in the form of a booklet, will be applicable to workers engaged in all kinds of construction and infrastructure jobs, whether roads, sewage, buildings or oil and gas installations, among others.

The guidelines will be based on international standards and specifications being prepared by the National Provisional Safety Committee presided over by the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning.

The aim is to ensure worker safety, and would require contractors, owners and consultants of the projects to abide by them. It is not clear what enforcement mechanisms will be deployed. The guidelines will also aim to reduce the disparity in training and safety awareness between Asian and Arab labourers.
