The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) has announced that 60% of the construction work on the $27million Al Majaz Waterfront development project, which will be the central park of Sharjah, has been completed.

This excludes the 4,700m2 allocated for the construction of eight new high-class restaurants and cafés with views overlooking the Khalid Lagoon and the Musical Fountain.

The waterfront project is spread over an area of 21,460m2, with the first phase occupying 11,240m2 and the second phase extending over 10,220m2.

Commenting on the project, H.E Marwan Jassim Al Sarkal, Shurooq CEO, said the Al Majaz Waterfront Development has begun taking shape, with work going on non-stop to ensure handover of the first phase can take place in the last quarter of this year.

He added that some amendments have been made to the project, including the addition of amenities, and that infrastructure works are now complete.

“So far we are on schedule for the completion of the linking of the Al Majaz Waterfront and Khalid Lagoon and on the semi-circular road and the parking lots.

“The next stage includes the installation of a giant musical water fountain in Khalid Lagoon, opposite the Al Majaz Waterfront, as well as the construction of new buildings to house services and facilities such as restaurants, cafés and recreational areas will also be established,” said Al Sarkal.

The final masterplan for the Al Majaz Waterfront includes numerous facilities that will make the development an integrated family park that will be a top destination for tourists, visitors and residents.

The project offers open areas designated specifically for children, areas set aside for cultural and entertainment activities, a mosque, special areas for walking, jogging and cycling, a sculpture garden, an arts area for children, a dancing fountain, public amenities, parking for 1,000 vehicles and sidewalks.

The Al Majaz Waterfront is part of Shurooq's strategy to encourage investment and tourism in Sharjah, in cooperation with Sharjah government departments and establishments, as well as international companies.

The Al Majaz Waterfront is located on the Khalid Lagoon in the heart of one of Sharjah's most vital and popular areas, which is the location for a number of the emirate's most high-profile events, such as the Sharjah Ramadan Festival, the Sharjah Water Festival, the Sharjah Lights Festival and the UIM Formula One Powerboat World Championship - Sharjah Grand Prix.
