GE Energy and Techint Cimi Montubi will provide gas turbine technology to Egypt under a contract valued at US $11 million (AED40.4 million).

The firms will work as partners to supply two GE Frame 9FA+e gas turbine generators, auxiliary equipment and training services to the Upper Egypt Electricity Production Company for the expansion of the El Kureimat Power Plant.

The new El Kureimat III power plant is located around 90km south of Cairo. It will provide 750MW of power to Egypt's electricity grid in a combined-cycle operation.

Electricity demand is growing at an annual rate of 7% in Egypt, fuelled by economic growth in the country. An existing 750MW combined-cycle plant in Cairo North II also features the Frame 9FA+e gas turbines and two GE 650MW steam turbines have also been operating at the El Kureimat site since 1997.
