Mohammed Abdul Aziz Al-Shaya’s vision for his company and recent success makes him an undoubted business leader in Kuwait. Its flagship project, The Avenues shopping mall, is expanding the country’s commercial possibilities to rival similar developments anywhere else in the Gulf.

The last year has seen further construction with Phase Three, drawing in the private sector as well as royal endorsement, and the company now looks towards the design of Phase Four.

Al-Shaya’s place in the Power 100 for has been secured in particular for the cold, hard profits he has helped generate for the company in the last year; 2010 saw the company post $68m, after tax, up 22% on 2009, with the first quarter profits rising 10% to $21m against the same period the previous year. Between last year and this, the company’s revenue from investment property hit $33.4m, with its total assets rising to more than $970m.

Few developers around the Gulf have been able to face the wider economic turmoil with more resilience over the last 18 months.

VICE CHAIRMAN & CEO
DRAKE & SCULL INTERNATIONAL

Khaldoun Tabari is the vice chairman and CEO of Drake & Scull international (DSI) PJSC. Tabari has led the overall development of the company from a local MEP contractor to the most aggressive construction firm in the Gulf.

Graduating from a US college in 1972, Tabari’s career has taken him from the UAE, where he worked for a family business from 1972 to 1980, to a brief stint in the UK, and then 14 years in Saudi Arabia, up to 1997. During his 13 years at DSI, the company has expanded its MEP business to provide competitive offerings in EPC contracting and civil work, as well as infrastructure, water and power; the acquisition of GTCC; and a public-listing on Dubai’s stock exchange. Last year saw the acquisition of two subsidiaries, organic growth in Oman and Syria, and the establishment of Drake & Scull Construction, its company for civil work outside UAE. Tabari also astutely ensured the company was actively bidding for projects in what is now the biggest construction market, Saudi Arabia, where rivals might still be tied largely to the UAE.

Today, around half its order book is in Saudi-based projects. He also oversaw the acquisitions of two contractors in Saudi, moves that immediately give the company greater presence and local knowledge of the market.

Tabari describes himself as the kind of person who takes at least an hour to unwind and a worrier by nature. “That has been with me since I graduated,” he said. “That is not a good trait, I do not leave work; it is always with me. I am always rehashing ideas. I look like a very quick decision-maker, but when you ask me a question, I have probably thought about it 100 times.”

In addition to his DSI duties, Tabari also serves as a board member for EMCOR Facilities Services Group (ME), Walltech; Cedar Mills, Jordan Fleet Leasing Company; First Qatar Real Estate in Qatar and Energy Central in Bahrain.
