The family of the late-Qais Bin Abdul Munim Al Zawawi (Oman’s former Deputy Prime Minister for Financial Economic Affairs) operate a variety of significant businesses in the Sultanate of Oman. His son Abdulmunim Al-Zawawi oversees construction company Carillion Alawi.

Carillion Alawi has been involved in the construction of the Rusayl Power Station, Fort Jalali-Muscat, Royal Hospital, Oman International Bank Headquarters, the 680-room Shangri-La Resort and Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. All are evidence of the company’s standards of workmanship and expertise.

In addition to being a director and shareholder of a diverse set of business interests in Oman, the UK and the US, Al-Zawawi established his holding own company, AMZ Group (his initials), in 1999.

Under his leadership, the AMZ Group aims to be an innovator and leader in a broad spectrum of industries, including interiors, food, fashion, security, FM, IT services, aviation and event management.

Broadway Malyan makes the Power 100 as an example of an architecture, urbanism and design practice that has diversified successfully and continues to pursue excellence and quality. The firm has just opened an office in Mumbai, the 14th international base for the practice, which now has a network stretching from São Paulo to Shanghai.

The Abu Dhabi based Middle East Middle East office has grown from its beginnings as an architectural studio in 2007 to provide master-planning, landscape architecture, interior design, planning and Landscape.

The practice achieved recognition at the recent Cityscape Abu Dhabi Awards. It was responsible for the Al Bandar waterside development in Abu Dhabi, and was also concept master-planner on Yas Island, named Best Residential Project (Built) and Best Urban Design and Masterplanning Project respectively. Its influence in the master-planning sector continues to grow with strategic projects for TDIC, Mubaldala, Aldar and Bloom Properties, while the education sector has grown by 150% this year, with high-profile commissions from private and state education providers in the region.

The Mumbai office will be led by director Ian Simpson and associate director Shweta Ranpura, who will spearhead the practice’s strategic push into India.

RAK FREE TRADE ZONE

Oussama El Omari is the CEO and DG of the Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone Authority (RAK FTZ).

Since the inception of the free zone in 1997, El Omari has been the driving force that has transformed it into reality, creating a thriving hub of global activity that is characterised by its pro-investment business environment. The growth of the free zone has been phenomenal under his stewardship; from 2006, RAK FTZ has been recognised as the ‘Best Emerging Free Zone’ in the region at the MELA Awards.

El Omari holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and an MBA from the US. His knowledge of world trade and global import/export trends has led him to chair the UAE Free Zone Round Table, and he is currently the Secretary General of the World Economic Processing Zone Association (WEPZA).

El Omari has also shared his wealth of knowledge and expertise by speaking at free zone conferences in Europe, USA, Middle East and North Africa. A charismatic and tireless leader, El Omari sets the tone for the free zone, both in word and action.

Colin Bird moved to Bahrain in March this year, after a 29-year career in the UK, to take up his new position as Middle East building structures director for URS/Scott Wilson.

“I have two primary roles,” explains Bird. “I have an operational role to run the multi-disciplinary design property team here in Bahrain, and a Middle East regional role to lead URS/Scott Wilson’s activities in the building design sector.

Bird says the 2022 FIFA Soccer World Cup “was only part of my interest in relocating to the region. Back in the UK, we collaborated with Foster + Partners on its successful design competition entry for the Lusail Stadium which, with its 90,000 seats, will host the opening game and the final. We certainly want to play a significant part in helping Qatar host the competition.”

Dominique Droniou has recently moved to VSL Middle East as the new GM. With over three decades of engineering and leadership experience, Droniou will take the lead to tackle new challenges ahead as VSL expands into the Saudi Arabia and Qatar market.

Droniou is optimistic about the regional construction market. “Our key strength is our ability to provide continuous innovation & quality solutions to an increasingly competitive market,” he says.

VSL’s experience in post-tensioning and related value engineering goes back more than 50 years. The company is an acknowledged leader in the construction of bridges and special structures.

VSL has been working on a wide range of projects in Qatar for the past 15 years. These include post-tensioning works on several bridges, Qatar Sport City tower, Doha City Center, International Islamic Bank HQ tower and Ras La Fan LNG tanks, among others.

JCB Engineering & Consultancy is a pure engineering design and consultancy practice, originally Lebanese and now in its 45th year, with an extensive list of project areas, including environmental engineering, transportation and traffic, architecture and master-planning and feasibility studies.

Tufenkjian graduated in 1986 from Baghdad University with a BSc in Civil Engineering, followed by a Master’s in 1992. He then started his own compny in Iraq called Sana, together with two partners, focusing on design and construction projects, before moving to Lebanon in 1993, where he worked in structural design and construction for Elie Zeinoun.

At the end of 1998, Tufenkjian moved to California in the US to work for JAMA, a leader in structural design and seismic consultancy, as a design engineer.

After a Master’s degree in applied mechanics from CSUN in California in 2001, Tufenkjian moved to Parsons, where he was assigned engineering manager for a major Iraq project in 2004.

Al-Futtaim Engineering was established in 1974 as an entrant in the fledgling air-conditioning market in Dubai. Part of the larger Al-Futtaim group, it now boasts six divisions, namely MEP, scaffolding and formwork, elevators and escalators, security and low-voltage systems, building products and air-conditioning.

It represents major international brands such as Hitachi elevators, Toto sanitaryware, Sanyo, Aftron and Toshiba air-con systems. From an initially low-key inception, the company took a strategic decision in 2003 to become part of the Dubai building boom that was then in its infancy.

“We realised the great potential in assisting the construction activity in Dubai and the rest of the region. We were in a unique position because of our six divisions, which were all related to the construction industry. The big advantage this gave us was customers in common.” MD Dawood Bin Ozair maintains though that “Abu Dhabi is the big one, where there is a lot of activity going on. Qatar is also coming up in a big way.”

Donna Sultan is CEO of KEO International Consultants, a consulting firm providing architectural design, civil engineering and project and construction management services.

Sultan joined KEO as a director in 1984. At the time, the firm had 300 employees and was mainly known as a medium-sized regional consultancy with annual fees of about $8m.

She was appointed CEO in 1991, shortly after the end of the Gulf War, when the company had only 26 employees. Today she is in charge of more than 2,300 professionals, with revenues for 2009 exceeding $206m. Sultan has pushed KEO into new markets in Africa, Europe and recently Asia, with new offices opening in Kuala Lumpur in March this year.

Abu Dhabi has become the company’s primary base of operations after KEO had a series of successful projects there such as Emirates Palace Hotel, major infrastructure works in Al Gharbia and mega construction projects throughout the UAE. These include major master-planning initiatives in Abu Dhabi and Saudi infrastructure projects.

Dxb.lab is an award-winning architectural practice based in Dubai.

Since its establishment in 2000 by Khalid Alnajjar, it has achieved a distinguished reputation in the Middle East. Its project portfolio ranges from private residences to commercial and office buildings and cultural and public projects.

Alnajjar was born and raised in the UAE. In 1995 he received his Bachelor of Architecture in Los Angeles, followed by a Master’s from Columbia University. He went on to work at Reiser + Umemoto RUR Architecture PC.

Upon his return to the UAE, Alnajjar worked as head of the detailed planning unit at Dubai municipality from 1997 to 2006. In 2000 he established his own practice, Dxb.lab, for which he received the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Award for Best Design Business in 2004.
