MAF Properties starts work on $1bn Syria project

Khams Shamat is a 150ha mixed-use project, with largest mall in Levant

Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) Properties has started working on the first phase of Khams Shamat, its 150ha mixed-use project in Syria. The project will include the largest shopping mall in the Levant region.

The project is being developed in the Yaafour district, 17km west of Damascus, and will be developed in multiple phases, at an estimated cost of over $1bn.

“The first stage of laying down the infrastructure and foundations for Phase One of the Khams Shamat project took place on 27 July, in preparation for the completion of works related to roads, electricity, water, sanitation, and public services,” said MAF Properties CEO Peter Walichnowski.

Waddah El Solh, the company's regional head of Syria and Lebanon, said design evaluation and review and architectural and engineering plans had all been completed in preparation for the project's commencement.

Upon completion, Khams Shamat will include international hotels, apartments, restaurants and cafes, galleries and showrooms, plus a high-profile business area and mall with a family entertainment centre and multiplex theatres. It will also feature educational and cultural facilities surrounded by large open spaces.
