Five companies have been shortlisted for the North Bahrain New Town Quay Walls Package 1A and 1B contract.

For Package 1A, Bahrain's Ahmed Mansoor Al A'Ali has placed the lowest bid of US $31.2 million (BHD 11.7 million), while Al Hassanain Company bid the highest with $57.6 million. Other bidders are Denmark's MT Hojgaards ($50.6 million), Bahrain's Nass Contracting ($34.2 million) and China Communications Construction ($47.5 million).

The same firms have been shortlisted for Package 1B, with Nass Contracting bidding the lowest ($24 million) and Al Hassanain the highest ($41.4 million).

A joint venture of Dutch dredging groups Koninklijke Boskalis Westminster and Van Oord won the $204 million land reclamation contract in December 2005 for the ten islands that make up the $2.65 billion North Bahrain New Town development.

The first phase of reclamation included two main islands with a combined area of 2.9 million m², while the second phase includes eight further islands covering an area of 2 million m².

The islands, which will be connected via a network of bridges, will have 18,000 housing units as well as infrastructure facilities such as a commercial centre, hospitals, a university, a sports centre and museum.

North Bahrain New Town, which was designed by a consortium of six companies that made up the French Consultant Group, is aimed at reducing housing shortages in the northern part of Bahrain. The consortium is led by Partenaires Développement and includes AMA Associés, Scau International, Agence TER, Setec International and Sogreah.
