The 50-storey Al Jawharah Tower on the Jeddah Corniche is on track for a June 2013 completion, Drake & Scull Construction MD Saleh Muradweij said at the CW Jeddah Expansion 2012 conference.

“Everything is going well. We are on target. We are accomplishing a seven-day cycle for a 2,000m2 floor area,” said Muradweij.

“The challenges are in the nature of the complexity of the project firstly, but that definitely is overcome by the engineering and proper planning of the project.

“The shape of the building is not uniform; the layouts constantly change as the building goes up, as does the façade curvature,” said Muradweij.

He commented that there is limited high-rise contractor expertise in Saudi Arabia at present, which meant such expertise had to be imported from the UAE and elsewhere.

“There is not much difference in the constructability or methodology of high-rises in Saudi Arabia versus Qatar or Dubai,” said Muradweij.

“The differences are related to logistics and constraints in terms of Saudi expertise in high-rise buildings.”

Al Jawharah Tower is a Damac Properties development. It is being built by a JV comprising the International Centre for Contracting and Drake & Scull Construction, the umbrella company for all civil work undertaken by Drake & Scull International outside the UAE.

The main consultant is the Zuair Fayez Partnership, while Salama is the structural engineering consultant.
