Singapore's Changi Airport Consultants has been awarded the contract to masterplan the expansion of King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba, Jordan.

CAI will draw up three potential plans for the expansion, which will project the facilities needed at the airport for the next 20 years.

The plans will focus on airport layout, the configuration of runways, taxiways, aprons, structures, navigational aids and land use in the surrounding area.

They will also look into making the development sustainable and cost effective, with land strategy aimed at attracting investment from aviation-related businesses.

The project is part of Aqaba Development Corporation's remit to upgrade the Aqaba Special Economic Zone.

"The timescale and cost is not yet determined," said Imad Fakhoury, chairman and CEO, Aqaba Development Corporation.

"We will work on the masterplan and then determine what the developmental and worth of the project will be."

According to Chow Kok Fong, CEO of Changi Airport Consultants, the development will also be sympathetic to the heritage site of Petra, which is in Aqaba.

"This is particularly important because Aqaba affords access to one of the most striking wonders of the ancient world."

The development will generate an estimated US $6 billion worth of investment for the Aqaba Special Economic Zone.
