Commercial bank, ABN Amro, hopes to achieve the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold rating for commercial interiors, for its sustainable design.

"We are in the process of furnishing the details for the certification process. It should be through in the next couple of weeks and we should know by December or January if we have achieved gold status," said ABN Amro's interior designer, Kshitij Limaye, director of Sankalpan.

ABN Amro, based in Dubai Outsource Zone, has employed LEED consultancy firm Green Technologies to help it achieve LEED certification for its commercial interiors.

Head of property services at ABN Amro, Jitin Kandy, said: "The decision was made by internal and local management, but we also have a mandate for sustainability from the global property and facilities team. Achieving LEED is the next step."

In a region that still needs educating on the benefits of green interiors, Kandy admits it has been a challenge sourcing the products.

"This market is very raw as far as this concept is concerned. It's been a great challenge to source the products and we had to generate awareness."

The company is currently looking for a facilities service provider to operate the building. "Apart from the fit-out done, we need to operate the facility to the same standards and we are finding this difficult to find people who understand."

The structure of the building has not been LEED certified.
