COMMENT, Design

As soon as the bells chimed in the New Year eleven months ago we knew that November would be a massive month for Commercial Interior Design.

Not only are we celebrating our second anniversary this issue, and consequently have packed the magazine with the most glittering profiles, latest case studies - including an industry exclusive peek at the interiors of the new Embassy club in Emirates Palace - we have met up with one of the metaphorical heavyweights of hospitality design, Trisha Wilson.

Her refreshingly modest attitude and philanthropic approach seemed at odds with the presumptions I had made about the person behind the mass production of projects across the surface of the globe.

She candidly referred to Wilson Associates' explosive expansion as a result of 'opportunities' and being in the proverbial 'right place at the right time.' The same rationality can be applied to the tremendous growth and ambitious commissions many design firms in this region enjoy.

The GCC is replete with acquisitions of space and commercial projects vying for an unequalled interior that challenges comparison. And this month we host our inaugural Commercial Interior Design Awards that seek to honour these very projects and the designers behind them.

The judges trawled through over a hundred entries across the various categories and instead of being dazzled by bountiful budgets and wowed by elegant excess, they rewarded ingenuity, innovation and above all imagination in a market where a surfeit of projects could easily mean jaded designs.

Conversely, the heated competition in the GCC has merely served to spice up the style and raise the bar. Yes, there's certainly truth in the cliché Wilson coined; expedience and good fortune cannot be dismissed, but attention to detail and professionalism reap rewards too...
