Contracts worth US $103.4 million (AED379 million) have been awarded by Istithmar for phase A of its Jumeirah Golf Estates project.

The first is a US $3.5million (AED13 million) design and build contract awarded to Hennessey Construction for the Agronomy Centre. The building will house maintenance equipment for the Greg Norman-designed Fire and Earth golf courses, which are being built in the first phase and are set for completion at the end of August 2008.

The contract should be completed within 10 months.

Ascon Road Construction has won a sewerage and water supply contract, worth $51 million, while Al-Buraq Contracting has picked up the $47 million deal for the low and medium voltage supply, street lighting and telecoms networking. Both contracts are expected to take 15 months.

"This is an important step in finalising this series of building contracts for phase A of the development, and we are confident that we have only chosen the very best partners to work with," said David Spencer, chief executive, Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Jumeirah Golf Estates has also recently issued and received the first set of tenders for the construction of the Norman Clubhouse and Whispering Pines villas, and these will be awarded in the coming weeks.

Both construction contracts for the Fireside and Flame Tree Ridge community villas have been tendered and the construction of these will commence before year end.

Jumeirah Golf Estates will include four environmentally themed 18-hole courses Earth, Fire, Wind and Water. The Earth and Fire courses and surrounding residences will be built first, followed by Vijay Singh's Water course; then the Wind course.
