13 awards handed out, 300 attend high-profile event at Grand Hyatt

The Construction Week Qatar Awards 2012 were held last night at the Grand Hyatt in Doha, paying tribute to the cream of the crop of Qatar's burgeoning construction industry.

A total of 13 awards were handed out in a range of categories, from projects to individuals, with about 300 people attending the high-profile event.

The judges commented: "From humble beginnings, Qatar has become one of the most widely-discussed countries of the world ... Qatar is on the verge of what will be one of the most dramatic transformations that a country has ever seen."

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to H.E. Khalifa Ali Al Hitmi, whom the judges said "was investing in Qatar long before the country had seriously engaged the international community".

Construction Executive of the Year went to Donna Sultan, CEO of KEO International Consultants, cited by the judges as "the person who has shown the greatest levels of leadership."

The coveted Contractor of the Year award went to Atlantic Contracting, complimented by the judges "on its efficiency to deliver quality in a timely manner through comprehensive application of technology."

Consultant of the Year went to Atkins, lauded by the judges for "providing local value and consistent support to the National 2030 Vision."

The judges of the CW Qatar Awards 2012 were: Andrew Robertson, CIOB Middle East vice-chairman; Boris Van Thiel, German Business Councils chairman and regional director of Voessing Engineering; Christian Dumond, CEO of Bouygues Construction Qatar; Maher Chatila, Hyder Consulting country manager; Matthew Gurney, board member of RICS and associate director for Turner & Townsend Qatar; Stephen Lines: CIOB Middle East president; and Timothy Stevens, CIOB Qatar chairman.

1. HSE Initiative of the Year: Mace International

2. Architecture Firm of the Year: Arab Engineering Bureau

3. Sub-Contractor of the Year: Arabian MEP Contracting

4. FM Company of the Year: MMG

5. MEP Company of the Year: Arabian MEP Contracting

6. Commercial Project of the Year: BASREC's IKEA Doha Festival City

7. Tower Project of the Year: Qatar Silhouette Tower

8. Engineer of the Year: Andrew Darlington, BIM Manager, Ramboll

9. Consultant of the Year: Atkins

10. Construction Executive of the Year: Donna Sultan, CEO, KEO International Consultants

11. Sustainable Innovation of the Year: Texas A&M, Qatar University's sustainable water and energy utilisation initiative

12. Contractor of the Year: Atlantic Contracting

13. Lifetime Achievement Award: H.E. Khalifa Ali Hitmi
