Master developer Nakheel is to implement a sustainability framework as a basis for its future projects and operations.

The firm outlined its plans at Cityscape Dubai following the conductance of a sustainability gap analysis by an independent firm. Nakheel CEO Chris O'Donnell explained: "As a master developer, Nakheel's work impacts on the physical, economic and social environments in which we operate. We know that we can do better in certain areas and we have identified areas that need improving...we are embarking on an ambitious sustainability agenda."

The Sustainability Advisory Group reviewed the sustainability of Nakheel's operation and projects over a six-month period. The results of this analysis have been used to create a framework on which the organisation will base its future actions and developments.

The first steps that the firm intends to take include the establishment of a Design Group to ensure that developments are based on intelligent planning; a continued membership of the Emirates Green Building Council; a long-term commitment to a partnership with the United Nations University; and the establishment of a Nakheel Sustainability Champions Forum.

Shaun Lenehan, head of environment with the Design Group commented: "The focus of green buildings involves not just energy and water savings but every little thing, down to the orientation of the buildings. The biggest success has been working environmental considerations into the entire development process through the concept design and masterplan to the detailed design phase...all aspects of green buildings can be worked in at all levels," Lenahan added.

In addition to an increased sustainability focus, the firm plans to set new minimum standards on a number of key policy areas such as health and safety and human rights. In line with this, it is currently developing accommodation for 60,000 workers in Dubai that will include recreational and retail facilities.
