SNC Lavalin has been awarded an engineering consultancy services contract by Ithmaar Development Company (IDC) for the first 66kV primary substation on the Dilmunia Health Island in Bahrain.

IDC’s chief executive officer and board member, Mohammed Khalil Alsayed, said that the award follows a careful pre-qualification process where the company invited leading firms to submit their credentials and proposals for undertaking the required services. The substation project works as a whole are valued at approximately $13.3m (BHD 5m).

“SNC Lavalin is a Canadian firm with a very good track record for such services and have been working closely with the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) on similar projects,” he said.

He added that the signing of this contract allows electro-mechanical works to commence for the substation, which has a capacity of 48 MVA. The substation will cater for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Dilmunia development and is expected to be energized in Q3 2014 in co-ordination with EWA, enabling electrical power provision to Dilmunia before the end of 2014.

The Dilmunia project in its entirety is a $1.6bn (BHD 603.2m) mixed-use development built on a 125-hectare, man-made island off the coast of Muharraq in Bahrain.

Dilmunia has a health and wellness theme and will include hotels, residential areas, leisure and shopping districts. It will provide  residents and visitors with hospital facilities, spas and state-of-the-art wellness services in a resort-type environment.
