Burj Qatar wins ME Architect's Best Project prize

Distinctive Doha tower by Jean Nouvel receives prestigious honour

NEWS, Design, Burj Qatar scoops prize for Best Overall Project

Famous French architect Jean Nouvel scooped the prize for Best Overall Project at the Middle East Architect Awards, for his renowned Burj Qatar project in Doha.

The striking cylindrical tower in Doha's West Bay area was recognised as the year’s best complete building or structure.

Judges described Burj Qatar as an elegant form with a careful integration of Islamic architecture - a tower that has become a symbol for an entire city.

It was also said to be a building that bridges modernity and tradition through the design of its external skin.

Collecting the award, Hafid Rakem, architect partner/area manager, Ateliers Jean Nouvel, said: "We are very happy and proud for winning. I would like to thank Jean Nouvel and His Excellency Sheikh Saoud. Without the client and the architect, our dream cannot be realised."

He added: "With this award, the project is becoming more significant. I would also like to thank all the consultants and the contractor in executing the project, including Hubert Tonka, special advisor to Jean Nouvel and Michel Pelissie, CEO of Ateliers Jean Nouvel.

As part of the prize, Atelier Jean Nouvel won a custom-made model from 3DR Models. Hafid chose a 1:500 scale model of Burj Qatar.

Sowwah Square (now renamed Al Maryah Square) in Abu Dhabi by Goettsch Partners' was highly commended in this category, and described by the jury as "a worthy second place for its sustainability efforts."

The project for Mubadala forms a focal point to the capital's new CBD on Al Maryah Island.
