Tender for Doha Metro trains set for 2013

Qatar Rail to host workshop for suitable companies next month

NEWS, Business

A tender for the manufacturing of rail coaches and control systems for Qatar's $41bn Greater Doha Metro project is likely to be floated by the second quarter of 2013.

According to The Peninsula, Qatar Rail has issued a statement which says that a workshop is planned for December aimed at informing prospective bidders - both suppliers and contractors - about the tendering process and the safety aspects expected of the control system.

Firms with experience in these relevant fields can forward requests to attend the workshop to info@qr.com.qa.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the $79m enabling works, which is being carried out by a consortium including Austrian tunnelling firm Porr, Qatari contractor HBK and Saudi BinLadin Group, took place last month. Work started at the site of Msheireb Properties' Downtown Doha station.

It will be a hub for all three proposed lines - red, green and gold - on the 85km-long system.

The first phase of the Doha Metro is set to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2019.
