The Middle East is lagging behind the UK in terms of energy efficiency, according to a construction industry executive.

Speaking to Construction Week during the Big 5, Michael Ankers, chief executive of the UK-based Construction Products Association, said: "I think there is greater attention in the UK on energy efficiency [than here] in the kind of products used in construction, the use of water and the use of energy. Energy efficiency has not been as big a focus here as it has in the UK."

Ankers added that, reflecting the global increase in awareness of energy efficiency issues, regional awareness of the importance of energy efficiency is expected to improve with the greater use of solar power in particular.

The use of off-site solutions is another major difference between the Middle East and the UK construction market, with the UK doing more and more work off-site for components such as bathrooms.

"There is less focus in this region on-off site solutions because labour is plentiful and cheap," added Ankers.
