Conran’s Dubai visit
VIP event held for launch of Ege carpet.
British design aficionado, Sebastian Conran, was in Dubai last month to mark the opening of Ege Carpet's new subsidiary in the UAE. The VIP event, which took place in the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, also featured the launch of the Danish carpet company's latest design collection Visual Texture. The carpet was created in collaboration with Conran's design and architectural practice, Conran & Partners.
Before the event the designer described how he was drawn to the company's digital dying technique and explained the inspiration behind the designs. "Specially mixed dyes allowed us the freedom to design a broad range that can be scaled and customised to suit a client's specific need based on the size, shape and style of their application. Our inspiration for the carpets was mainly drawn from exploring natural forms and biology, specifically repeated cells," he said.
The New Zealand raw wool is processed and spun in Denmark, before it is woven into plain white carpeting four metres wide. It is then decorated to order using unique digital-dyeing technology. The carpet is then laminated to a variety of backings and given special qualities such as anti-static and low rolling resistance.
Conran also gave a lecture during the event where he explained his own career progression along with his thoughts on all aspects of design and creativity. He also described his company's new modularised hotel concept, Yotel, which is influenced from aircraft business class cabins. The hotels, the first of which opened in Gatwick in July, are to be located in airports around the world. The designer went on to explain his ideas on perfect interior design: "We crave simplicity and serenity with a little glamour from time to time. The best interior design should be about achieving a sense of harmony, equilibrium and synergy."
