The region's interior designers were in high spirits last month as the inaugural Commercial Interior Design Awards took place at Grosvenor House Hotel in Dubai. The evening celebrated one of the fastest growing and fascinating industries in the Middle East.
It not only honoured the 12 winning projects and the talented design teams behind them, but also applauded the community of designers that ensure the region's commercial projects can stand shoulder-to shoulder, and often surpass, interiors emerging from more established interior design markets.
The GCC region is perceived to be a designer's dream, with projects boasting unlimited budgets, grandiose schemes, limited purely by the designer's own creativity. In reality, the timescales seem to be shortening every month; a project's purse strings are now tied into a big double knot and yet the Client's aspirations of greatness continue to soar.
Creating a successful project in this region is getting harder as the competition hots up and the challenges double in number. The awards weren't designed just to honour the 40 odd finalists and the 12 winning projects, it's a chance to celebrate being part of a rapidly maturing business in one of the most talked about corners of the globe.
KCA International scooped three of the awards, including the most coveted accolade of the evening, Interior Design Firm of the Year. KCA's founder, Khuan Chew once told me that: "The worst thing about design is when people play it safe and refuse to push the boundaries." It is this unswerving attention to detail and dedication to exploring the unusual design solutions that impressed the judges and raised the benchmark of designing to an international standard regionally. We're already looking forward to next year, see you there!
