Giving the opening address at the Middle East Rail 2013 conference in Dubai, Al Muhannadi said: "For the underground, we are already in the final stages of tender evaluation and we are ready to award this for the red package by March and for Gold and Green by the end of Quarter 2 for 2013."
Some 18 different consortia had pre-qualified for the tender line packages.
Al Muhannadi, whose organisation is responsible for the delivery of the Metro, the heavy rail network linking to the pan-GCC network and light rail systems at Lusail and West Bay, also said a plethora of other tender packages are set to be floated soon.
The tender for a package of five underground stations is currently under evaluation and is expected to be awarded by the second quarter of 2013, while a tender for the elevated sections of track is now in the final stages of pre-qualifications and should be awarded by the end of the year.
Qatar Rail has also sent out expressions of interest for rolling stock and systems, and is expected to float tenders for both by April, with awards expected to be made in the first quarter of 2014.
The tender for track work should be floated in August and be awaded during the second quarter of 2014.
The first phase of the new Doha Metro system is set to be commissioned by 2019 and will comprise 60% of the total network - 151km and 48 stations. The second phase, which will add a further 44 stations and 100km of track, will be completed by the first quarter of 2026.
For the heavy rail network, the tender for the has already been floated for the detailed design of the entire network, whose construction will be split into three phases. Al Muhannadi said that Qatar Rail has received interest from 26 different consuntalts for the project, and that the tender is expected to close next month.
Al Muhannadi said that tunnelling work on the Lusail light rail network was now 100% complete. The stations will be developed alongside the construction of the rest of the project, while tenders for the 39km of track and rolling stock on the project are expected to be awarded soon.
