Quay wall collapse hits D1 Tower site

The construction site of the D1 Tower in Dubai Culture Village on the banks of Dubai Creek flooded last week after a quay wall collapsed.

No injuries were reported at the site, which is being developed by Emirates Sunland and built by Arabtec Construction.

"There was a collapse of an embankment, or filled area, as the quay wall had some problems and the water ingressed and took away the embankment fill and flooded the site. There were no casualties," said Thomas Barry, CEO, Arabtec. "The cause may have been due to a design issue and is not part of our scope of work.

"It's a perimeter to our site area that is being designed and built by others - the quay wall and the fill behind it failed, letting the water into our site from the creek."

The tower, which is expected to be 284m-high with 80-storeys of apartments, is situated next to the Palazzo Versace Condominiums and Resort.

Construction is worth about US $175 million (AED640 million).

A similar incident took place in February this year when the quay wall of the site of the Infinity Tower in Dubai Marina collapsed, causing it to flood.

Construction of the tower is still yet to begin.

Similar consequences are expected for the D1 Tower.

"Of course, this is going to cause a delay to the project and the costs will go up. Also, the entire area will have to be redone once the water is taken out. But that doesn't mean the project won't go ahead," added Barry.

The D1 Tower, designed by Holford & Associates, is a twin tower to the world's tallest residential tower, Q1, in Australia.
