Belgian designs eco 'stacked' towers for China
Vincent Callebaut's 'Asian Cairns' reminiscent of stacked space pods
Vincent Callebaut, a Belgian architect known for creating urban ‘eco-visions’ has designed a project entitled ‘Asian Cairns’ in Shenzhen, China, that is reminiscent of stacked space pods.
The mixed use towers aim at recurring mass rural migration by providing sustainable ‘farmscrapers’ that produce more energy than they consume through food production, wind harnessing and solar power.
It uses biomorphism and bionics to create architecture that becomes cultivated in the emerging Chinese megalopolis.
The design is reflective of a cairns structure, a Neolithic practice of piling stones into tall markers. Each stacked tower, six in total, serves as a place for housing, offices as well as leisure spaces.
They are made up of three interlaced eco-spirals with public orchards and urban agriculture fields. Water from the pod-farms will be harvested in basins and recycled using phyto-depuration.
Each tower is a central vertical boulevard, orthogonal in shape and optimised for composting and circulation. Steel rings delineate space around double decking and are enclosed by a glazed skin encrusted with a field of solar cells and a forest of wind turbines.
The project will also include hanging gardens, welcoming a variety of urban farming programmes.
