Matthew Squires, managing director of Atkins in Oman, has been named Construction Executive of the Year at the Construction Week Awards: Oman.

Squires was recognised by the judges for the honest and open style of his client relationships and the clear focus of his communication.

One judge described him as a strong leader with excellent technical qualities. Another felt that it was clear that his company has been influential in not only introducing international standards to Omani projects, but further encouraging and guiding young Omani professionals.

Winner Matthew Squires was presented with his award by Hassan Ramadhan Suleiman, the general manager of Oman International Exhibition Centre.

He said: “We work hard to understand clients’ needs and are continually improving the quality of delivery. This is an award for a team and we are proud to have been chosen.

“There was talk in the award presentation of our true Omanisation, and we really are committed to this and it is something we are proud of.

“For the future we will continue to build on our position of strength.”

Highly commended in the category was Muhammad Sultan Al Salmy from Hoehler + Partner who, it was noted had managed the start up of a business and completed a major landmark project during the initial years of operation.

The award was announced at a gala ceremony held in Muscat, which saw 12 accolades presented to a selection of industry-leading companies, projects and individuals.

Selected finalists from the Construction Week Awards: Oman, which was sponsored by Famco, will get a further chance to claim success at the GCC edition of the Construction Week Awards, to be held in Dubai, on 11 December.

Entries to the awards were submitted online and winners were selected by a panel of nine judges.

This is the second year Construction Week has run an awards programme in Oman.

A full review of all the winners will appear in the March 30 issue of Construction Week.
