CW Awards Oman: Omran grabs sustainability trophy

Firm wins Sustainability Initiative of the Year for Duqm Crowne Plaza

Omran claimed the Sustainability Initiative of the Year Award at the Construction Week Awards: Oman for its development of a water reuse system at the Duqm Crowne Plaza.

The judges said the decision to implement this project, clearly demonstrates the winner's understanding of the importance of sustainable design in its projects.

"The benefits derived from the project are significant, and the company should be commended for its approach," said one judge.

The winning entry described a simple, yet very effective, idea: an the on-site sewage treatment plant with the ability to reduce the impact of sea water pollution by almost 75%.

Abdul Wahid Al Farsi, vice president of external affairs, collected the award on behalf of Omran, which was presented by Vasanth Kumar of silver sponsor Towell Construction.

“The system we used at the Crowne Plaza is a system that we have developed is the most sophisticated reuse of water. This is a system them wwe can adapt to a wide range of situations and clients.

“We hope to qualify for LEED certification and we have gone further in all aspects than the legislation to show that we are continuing to pursue excellence.”

Carillion Alawi was the highly commended finalist, having submitted a comprehensive entry showcasing numerous initiatives that are being undertaken by the company on a day-to-day business.

The award was announced at a gala ceremony held in Muscat, which saw 12 accolades presented to a selection of industry-leading companies, projects and individuals.

Selected finalists from the Construction Week Awards: Oman, which was sponsored by Famco, will get a further chance to claim success at the GCC edition of the Construction Week Awards, to be held in Dubai, on 11 December.

Entries to the awards were submitted online and winners were selected by a panel of nine judges.

This is the second year Construction Week has run an awards programme in Oman.
