CW's UAE infrastructure conference opens

Transport and housing key themes of conference at Dubai Westin

NEWS, Business

Infrastructure is "the hardware that enables a country to prosper", Hyder Consulting's regional managing director, Wael Allan said delivering the opening address at CW's UAE Infrastructure conference this morning.

The conference's key themes are infrastructure, affordable housing and transportation, which Allen described as "the artery of any economy".

"Ease of movement, flexibility and speed is key to any economy".

He said that his own journey times into work had been increasing in recent months, which was a sign that Dubai's roads are becoming much busier again, despite regular improvements.

"How long will the UAE continue to build more roads? Is there an alternative in public transport? That is certainly a challenge for the region," he added.

The conference will also examine the role of housing in the UAE - particularly the need to develop more affordable housing.

"Housing not merely about providing shelter, but its also about creating a positive impact socially."
