Larsen & Toubro Heavy Engineering LLC (L&T HE) has signed a Sub-Usufruct Agreement (SUA) with Sohar Industrial Port Company (SIPC) to establish a green-field plant in Sohar, Oman for the manufacture of high-tech equipment for the process industry.

An initial investment of approximately US $50 million (OMR19.2 million) is expected for Phase I.

The new facility will have the capability to manufacture critical equipment for refineries, petrochemicals and fertilizer projects and other process industries.

It will initially occupy an area of 300,000m2 with provision for future expansion of another 100,000m2, for which land has already been reserved.

The facility, which will have hi-tech manufacturing capabilities, will require a considerable amount of skilled manpower in both the engineering office as well as on the shop floor. L&T, which put considerable emphasis on training and development, intends to train high school graduates from Oman in the Vocational Training Institute for specialised trades, such as welding and fitting.

L&T has supplied critical equipment for the process industry worldwide and this facility will augment its manufacturing capacity with special focus in the GCC region.
