The Baniyas Investment & Development Company (BID), founded in 2005 as a subsidiary of the Baniyas Sports Club, has announced the launch of a mixed-use US $599 million (AED2.2 billion) project.

The scheme, which will be built at the city of Baniyas in Abu Dhabi, will include a 20,000-seat arena and new headquarters for the sports club.

It will also include residential towers and villas of various sizes, which can house up to 3,000 people.

There will be a commercial aspect, including a 140,000m2 shopping mall, with 225 shops and a 2,280-space car park.

The mall will be the first of its kind in Baniyas.

A BID spokesman said: "This project is about to enter the initial construction phase, and represents the first of several pioneering plans which will be announced by BID in due time."

The project has been planned since early 2007 and should be finished by 2009.

BID will also construct a school, which will be managed by a Swiss organisation, and a ballroom which can be used for special occasions.

There will also be seven sports training fields and a number of multi-use games courts.
