Dubai Municipality says no to plastic bags
The six month campaign will kick off in May 2013 to educate the public
The waste management department of Dubai Municipality is launching a six-month long awareness campaign under the title 'Say No to Plastic Bags' aimed at educating the public on the ways of reducing plastic bags usage.
Starting in the first week of May 2013, it is organised to implement the directives of the Ministry of Environment and Water to mitigate the use of all type of plastic bags used by the public especially the plastic bags distributed by shopping centres, as well as to completely stop non-biodegradable plastic products.
Abdullah Al Ghaffari, head of customer services unit of the waste management department and one of the coordinators of the campaign said that the civic body has prepared variety of programs to educate the public about the hazardous consequences of increased use of plastic bags.
The programme will be conducted while working with cooperative societies, shopping malls and centres.
"Plastic bag waste is considered one of the sources of environment pollution. The annual consumption of plastic bags in the Emirate of Dubai reached 2.9 billion bags, which is deemed harmful to the environment and public health. To overcome this dilemma, effective community contribution is essential with the efforts of concerned authorities," he said.
The civic body also issued a leaflet to be distributed during the campaign which includes the methods of reducing plastic bag wastes and its risks related to health, environment and marine and animal wealth.
