Halcrow to finish key $630m Sharjah road by 2020
Shis-Khorfakken road & tunnel link to cut journey times by 30 minutes
Work on a $630m strategic road link from Sharjah central regions and city to the town and port of Khorfakkan is scheduled to be completed in 2020, says designer and supervisor Halcrow.
The consultancy firm is working with the ruler of Sharjah to construct a 23.2km dual carriageway that passes through five rock tunnels in the Hajjar mountains.
Journey time is expected to be shortened by half an hour between Khorfakkan and Sharjah city, aiding the emirate's economic development by encouraging the use of Khorfakkan port, bypassing the Straights of Hormuz.
Halcrow Area manager Adrian Manning said the main focus now was to build the central section of the project which includes the remaining four rock tunnels, one measuring 2.6km-long, making it the UAE's second longest rock tunnel. The 2.6km tunnel is expected to take five years to build in itself, with work set for next year.
The firm has been providing detailed design services and construction supervision.
