Mall of the Emirates wins design award

Shopping centre judged to be one of the best in the world.

NEWS, Design

Dubai's largest shopping centre, Mall of the Emirates, has walked away with the Best Design and Innovation award at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) International Design and Development Awards 2007.

The mall was deemed to be one of the best designed shopping centres in the world, winning the award alongside Pleilunio in Madrid, Spain and The Shops at La Cantera in San Antonio, USA.

Entries were judged on a range of criteria including best land use, overall design, development goals, productivity and innovation.

Speaking about the award Jeffery Rossely, executive vice president, Majid Al Futtaim Group, owners of Mall of the Emirates, said this had added to the difficulty of winning the award: "The award was a challenge to win due to the extremely strict criteria across all categories. Not only was the project judged on its architectural and design aesthetics, but also on construction and operational efficiencies along with its ability to fulfill environmental safety and conservation criteria."

This is the first time the mall has been awarded for its design credentials following accolades for its construction and marketing. The shopping centre was also named Best Retail Destination of the Year at the World Retail Awards 2007.
