Martha Schwartz Partners wins Damascus design contract

US-based landscape design firm Martha Schwartz Partners (MSP) has won an international park design competition in Syria.

US-based landscape design firm Martha Schwartz Partners (MSP) has won an international park design competition in Syria.

MSP will be providing public realm and landscape design for the Massar Children's Discovery Centre and park in Damascus.

"This is a landmark project as the park and the discovery centre will be the focus for a new Syrian educational programme," said Lorraine Landels, senior principal at Martha Schwartz Partners.

Based around the idea of the Damascus rose, the outdoor space will be divided into areas, meant to represent petals, which are designated play areas for children.

Water is another strong element to the project. Water will be collected beneath a terraced mound and used to create water events and features.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin in July 2008.

MSP works primarily on large-scale public projects, land reclamation and planning studies. Its portfolio includes Grand Canal Square in Dublin, Ireland, and Mesa Art and Entertainment Centre, Arizona, USA.
