Labourers praise improved living conditions

Aldar Laing O'Rourke and Compass work together to improve camp conditions.

Lower-skilled workers on Yas Island feel "respected" and "more productive" due to improved living conditions, according to two of its residents.

"This camp is better (than ones I have previously work on) and I really enjoy being here. It's clean, tidy and spacious, there is no congestion. Everyone says "good morning", even the senior management. I'm a simple man, but people here give you so much respect. This makes me happy," said Rakesh Kumar, TC (tower crane) operator, Aldar Laing O'Rourke (ALOR).

Kumar and Thomas Antony, camp supervisor, both work for ALOR and are two of the first workers to be exposed to a new concept called Village Life that is being offered to companies by FM service provider Compass.

"There are so many camps around that are filthy and unclean. This one is not like that, the standards are high. Camps are the backbone to a project, if employees are happy in their living environments they will work well," added Antony.

Village Life aims to turn labour camps into communities by delivering additional services. Yas Island Worker's Community held it's monthly sports day last Friday, with people competing in volleyball, cricket, Kabadi, pool and table tennis.

"I played in the cricket tournament and we won! Being looked after makes me feel more inclined to work. If there are any problems in the community, solutions are found. I have a very good life," added Kumar.

Yas Island Worker's Community currently houses 6,000 ALOR workers. This number will increase to 16,000 by June.

The April issue of facilities management Middle East will feature a full report on Yas Island Worker's Community.
