Sharjah unveils amphitheatre for Al Majaz Island

Facility will house galleries and space for 4,500 spectators

The amphitheatre will cost $32.7m (AED120m) and will cover an area of 7,238m2. It will be able to house up to 4,500 spectators and also have space for galleries, conference rooms, shops, restaurants and extensive landscaping.

It will be used to host international culture and arts events. Plans for its construction were announced as part of the Sharjah Capital of Islamic Culture 2014 (SICC) launch, according to Sharjah Media Centre.

The Al Majaz Island will be linked to Sharjah's Khalid Lagoon St by a new $3.5m (AED13m) bridge.

A contract for the island's development has been awarded to Gulf International Engineering Consultants and Emirates Stone. The bridge contract has been awarded to Al Darwish Engineering and Halcrow Group.
