ETA Star Engineering & Contracting was named sub-contractor of the year at last night's Construction Week Awards 2013.

In choosing the company, the judges honed in on features such as its dedicated training centre, which helps the company provide coaching and support for teams and individual employees to equip them with the skills they need.

The judges also praised the company for its health and safety awards, including one from the Sixco-Midmac-JV for attaining 10m man hours without a Lost Time Incident for its Doha Convention Center Project.

“This is the fourth award that ETA Star has won this year,” said A K Saksena, director of Qatar operations. “It is a huge responsibility to consistently maintain such a high profile. However, I think our customers have confidence in us.”

K S Shah Ali, additional director of Qatar operations at ETA Star, added: “Every project is a challenge. When it comes to quality and safety standards, we pay detailed attention to the workmen. This is one of the main reasons behind our success; we place a high degree of importance on the quality of our safety standards. This is obviously a prime requirement when it comes to construction projects.”

Paul Floyd, managing director of FAMCO, a platinum sponsor of the event, made the award presentation.

ALEC Ceilings & Partitions was highly commended in the category, with the judges noting that it managed to stand out because of its strength in all areas of the competition criteria, with a concise and information-rich submission.

Paul Briers, ALEC, contract manager, said: "Over the last year, we’ve been involved in two really big projects, one in Abu Dhabi and one in Dubai, and a few other smaller ones, which makes us fairly well balanced in the UAE. We’ve had difficult jobs and challenging circumstances but I think we’ve delivered well, which makes us stand out. "

Al Arabia Electro Mechanical LLC - Juma Al Majid Group, Bahwan Engineering Company and Mosart Marble & Mosaic International made the final shortlist in the category.

The Construction Week Awards are an annual series of events that recognise and reward the best the GCC construction industry has to offer. This year's event was supported by presenting sponsor DU, and platinum sponsors SAP and FAMCO.

The next edition takes place in March, in Oman, and is open for entries now.
