CW Awards: Uni wins Commercial Project of Year
Development described as stunning example of Omani architecture
Oman's German University of Technology was named Commercial Project of the Year at last night's Construction Week awards.
The project, entered by Hoehler+Partner, stood out for the judges because it addressed all of the areas of the competition at a high level, with design quality, timely implementation and good cost control.
They also described the winner as something clearly outside of the normal Oman approach, with it showing innovation and incorporating sustainable design measures.
One judge described it as a stunning example of what could be called modern Omani architecture.
Having already won in the same category of the Oman awards and picked up Project Manager of the Year, this was a neat hat-trick of accolades for the company.
And it follows a private visit from His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said last December.
Muhammad Sultan Al Salmy, managing partner and senior architect, Hoehler+Partner, told CW: "There was big competition. We’re happy to win because it pushes education and it was an education project."
"From the visit of His Majesty, winning this award and the awards in Oman, it has shown us that it is good work and a good team working on it," he added.
Highly commended was the Oberoi Centre, entered by Faithful+Gould, a project that the judges saw as a great response to market needs, delivered in an effective manner, to a high standard.
“It’s great to win this award and see our work recognised in this manner,” said Chris Brogan, project manager.
Imad Ghantous, managing director of property at Hyder Consulting, the gold sponsor of the event, made the award presentation.
The Octal Pet Plant from Atkins, Nation Tower from Arabtec Construction and Barwa Commercial Avenue from ETA Star Engineering & Contracting also made the final shortlist in the category.
The Construction Week Awards are an annual series of events that recognise and reward the best the GCC construction industry has to offer. This year's event was supported by presenting sponsor DU, and platinum sponsors SAP and FAMCO.
The next edition takes place in March, in Oman, and is open for entries now.
