Maged Fares from BAM International was named Project Manager of the Year at last night's Construction Week Awards.

One of four individual awards presented on the night, judges said the challenges he faced working on site at Sheikh Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium, managing the huge numbers of people, trades and materials, cannot be understated.

"It is obvious he played a critical role in the success of the projects he has lead," said one of the judges.

Despite the individual nature of this award, Fares was keen to highlight the important contribution made by his colleagues and partners.

“This is a great achievement for the project management team as a whole,” he said. “We have worked extremely hard over the last 16 months in order to get the stadium finished.

“Fortunately, we had a fantastic project team,” he continued. “BAM International, EC Harris and the client worked closely together to achieve a shared goal. Construction is people, so we created a team that could make this happen.”

Highly commended in the category was Alex Carter from Hyder Consulting.

"He has demonstrated his abilities across a wide range of projects and regions. Not only a leader, he has shown his strengths in innovation and problem solving, a key to success for any project manager," said one of the judging panel.

Carter, an associate director - structures at Hyder, said of his recognition by the judges: "It's an honour to be thought of in that way by the panel of esteemed judges. It definitely was a surprise."

Mina Nagib, CEO of iMCC Group, a category sponsor of the event, made the award presentation.

Norman Taylor of KEO International Consultants, Richard Lisker of Hoehler + Partner and Steven LaRocco from Parsons, also made the final shortlist in the category.

The Construction Week Awards are an annual series of events that recognise and reward the best the GCC construction industry has to offer. This year's event was supported by presenting sponsor DU, and platinum sponsors SAP and FAMCO.
