fmME delves below the corporate strategy
0.00 What does your role involve?
My role involves strategy, and all the usual elements it takes to run a business, but all of that is only possible when the people who make it happen day-to-day are engaged, inspired and empowered. That is an incredibly important part of my role, to create a positive environment where others can thrive and grow.
1.45 What do you love most about your job?
There is nothing more satisfying than seeing people develop as managers and leaders within the business. We invest in our people across the organisation and work on their development. I love watching them practice new skills and their progression to the next level, which often results in remarkable achievements. It is truly rewarding, when a situation is diffused in an emotionally intelligent way, or when a team engages in problem solving creatively with passion. Landing the odd large contract is also quite nice too!
2.24 What is the most challenging thing about your job?
Finding enough great people to help the company grow and expand. We love our people at Emrillto not just be technically excellent in their chosen fields but to also exhibit the right behaviours. With our considerable growth over the past few years, our recruitment standards have actually become more exacting, and finding the right kind of people is now much harder.
3.15 What has been your most memorable project and why?
Launching the Emrill Energy services business is hugely important to me. Not only because energy is the most significant operating cost of a building, but for the fact that buildings are responsible for 40% of man-made carbon emissions annually. We are engaged in projects saving 40% of a building’s consumption, and I feel we are at the start of something that can make a material difference to a very big economic, social and environmental problem.
3.40 Where do you see the FM industry in five years?
The industry will see immense growth following the win of the Expo 2020 bid over the next few years. It will become a much more important and fundamental part of business operations. FM is the heartbeat of a building, and companies that want to maximise the value they get out of their assets realise that outsourcing to specialists, with the right technology and expertise, is imperative to make their core operations more efficient and effective.
4.15 What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to spend time with my family, enjoying the delights the UAE has to offer. Other than trying interesting foods, going to the beach or investigating new parts of town, I enjoy playing squash, going to the gym and occasionally, even kite surfing. Fortunately, there is a lot to do in the UAE!
