Abu Dhabi traffic improvements phase one complete
Project includes expansion of Sheikh Zayed Road
The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi has completed the first phase of traffic improvements on Abu Dhabi City entrances and exits.
The traffic improvements included expansion of Sheikh Zayed Road for vehicles coming from Al Maqta Bridge heading towards Abu Dhabi City.
Works included the increase of lanes from three to four and from two to three at some points, adjusting ground lines, adding traffic signals in addition to asphalt surface removal and placement of a new asphalt layer in order to boost the road capacity to withstand the expected increased vehicle numbers.
DoT completed the project, as part of the plan set by the Safety and Traffic Solutions Committee, in a record time of 120 hours of progressive work with no accidents.
The committee consists of a number of partners including DoT, Abu Dhabi Police, Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM), and Urban Planning Council (UPC).
The project of widening Sheikh Zayed Road is in three phases, with the soon to start second and third phases encompassing widening the same road near the Ministries Complex towards Al Maqta Bridge and at the entrance of Al Maqta Bridge from both sides in order to accommodate the growing number of vehicles, while offering world-class safety standards for all users.
