RTA awards deals for four Dubai Tram footbridges

Authority says it will issue tenders for another seven bridges in 2014

NEWS, Business

The RTA has awarded a contract to build four new covered and air-conditioned pedestrian footbridges for users of the new Dubai Tram.

Two bridges will be built over Al Sufouh St, one will link an area of Tecom with the opposite side of the street and one will link the Dubai Marina Mall.

The contract awards were endorsed at a meeting led by RTA chair Mattar Al Tayer.

"The construction of new projects stems from RTA's keenness on improving and upgrading the main roads network in Dubai city, maintaining the safety of pedestrians, linking business and residential neighbourhoods, and minimising run-over accidents," he said.

He added that the RTA had completed 94 bridges to date and is currently working on a further 11. Tenders for another seven pedestrian bridges are set to be floated this year, as part of a plan that will see 17 new footbridges built by the end of 2016.
