Nakheel has awarded a $102mn contract to Gulf Technical Construction Company (GTCC) to build its The Pointe at Palm Jumeirah development.

The company, a subsidiary of Dubai-based Drake & Scull, is set to start work before the end of this month

The Pointe will be located at the tip of Palm Jumeirah, opposite Atlantis, and is scheduled for completion in 2016. The project was established to provide a major shopping centre for the thousands of residents of the man-made project, which do not have one close by at present.

The 136,000m2 project will include a range of shops, restaurants and entertainment facilities as well as a fountain display, Nakheel said in a statement.

The Pointe will be accessible by the Palm Monorail which will be connected to the mainland tram currently under construction.

It will also be served by water taxis from nearby hotels.

The Pointe is one of several new Nakheel developments underway at Palm Jumeirah. Others include Nakheel Mall, The Boardwalk and Palm West Beach.
