Oman Healthcare City invitation

Kuwait-based Gulf Investment House will invite proposals for the design of its proposed US $780 million (OMR300 million) healthcare city in Oman in the second half of 2008.

Kuwait-based Gulf Investment House will invite proposals for the design of its proposed US $780 million (OMR300 million) healthcare city in Oman in the second half of 2008.

Tenders for the main construction package will be issued in early 2009.

Last week, GIH said that it was planning to construct the project over an area of 1 million m2, located about 100km from Muscat and next to the Blue City development.

"We are currently conducting a feasibility study for the project and once that is done we will invite a few of the top international architects and designers to submit their proposals," said Bashar Al Tuwaijri, senior direct investment manager, GIH.

"We are the main developer but we are undertaking this project along with our subsidiaries from across the region including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE and Oman.

"We are waiting for approvals from the Ministry of Tourism in Oman and other governmental organisations before we finalise things."

Al Tuwaijri added that the contract would be implemented on a build, operate and transfer basis.

The project would include the construction of specialised hospitals and clinics, medical colleges, conference halls, hotels and shopping malls.
