The first phase of Barwa’s labour city in Industrial Area will be ready by summer this year, says a senior official.

The project, named Barwa Al Baraha, located next to West End Park, houses a huge truck parking facility that was opened recently.

About 75% of work for Phase One has already been completed and the housing units will start receiving the first occupants by the third quarter of this year, Abdullah Al Subai, chief executive officer of Barwa Real Estate Company, told Al Sharq.

The facility can accommodate 22,000 labourers in the first phase. Several companies have already booked space for their workers in the sprawling city, Al Subai said.

He said the recently opened truck parking facility was secure and guarded round-the-clock. All basic services like lighting and toilets are available and a fuel station has been opened to serve the heavy vehicles and equipment, he added.

The Barwa Al Baraha project was designed to accommodate 53,000 labourers and other single workers. The labour accommodations comprise 64 four-storey buildings, with each floor having 130 rooms.

The city is divided into four complexes, each with 16 buildings, other facilities and green areas.

Constructed over 445,872m2, the city is considered the biggest of its kind in the GCC region and will meet international standards.

The facilities include eight dining halls serving three meals daily, with menus catering to workers from different countries.

There will be a common laundry for the workers. The city will also have commercial outlets to serve the workers as well as companies and the public.

Each complex has 48 shops and other facilities, including mosques, football grounds, and volleyball and basketball courts.

The housing units for other single workers comprise 16 buildings with a total capacity of 10,000 people. Each building has three stories with 97 rooms each, supported by facilities like dining halls and playgrounds.

The city will also house a second hand car showroom, a public auction ground and vehicle spares shops. There will be an area for sale of second hand industrial equipment. A workshop for maintenance of trucks, heavy vehicles and industrial equipment will also be set up, besides a huge multi-purpose warehouse, shopping centre, supermarket and other commercial outlets. The city will also have a health centre, equipped with an emergency unit to provide medical care to the inhabitants.
