ABB wins Dubal upgrade contract

ABB has won a US $39 million (AED143 million) contract to upgrade rectifier, transformer and automation systems at Dubai Aluminium Company?s (Dubal) smelter complex.

ABB has won a US $39 million (AED143 million) contract to upgrade rectifier, transformer and automation systems at Dubai Aluminium Company’s (Dubal) smelter complex.

The scope of works includes the replacment of five high voltage rectifier transformers with larger units rated at 86MVA to increase capacity and enable Dubal to combine two smelting potlines.

ABB will also supply control and protection systems and 250kA field-orientated control equipment. In addition, the firm will upgrade existing facilities including high voltage cables, low voltage control cables, fire detection and fire fighting equipment.

Commissioning of the systems is scheduled to begin in July 2007, with completion expected in March 2008.
